Kevin Love & the NBA

Ever since DeMar DeRozan spoke about his mental health in 2018, the NBA and its players have been very vocal on the topic. Around that time, Kevin Love wrote an iconic piece in The Players Tribune detailing his mental health experiences. Then, earlier this week, Love published “To Anybody Going Through It,” a follow-up to that article discussing how he has continued to manage his mental health.

Over the last few months, the Cavs forward has been very vocal supporting those going through mental health challenges. He donated over $500k to UCLA towards research on the topic and was awarded the ESPY’s 2020 Arthur Ashe Courage Award in June. Presented to an individual whose contributions transcend sports, Love is the first winner for advocating to reduce mental health stigma among athletes.

While Love and the Cavs never made the playoffs, the NBA is continuing to talk about mental health during the Conference Finals. After leading the Nuggets to a Game 7 victory over the Clippers, Nuggets forward Jamal Murray spoke to The Athletic about his anxiety within the bubble.

“(The mental health struggle) is a real thing, and I could see it. There’s time when you’re like, ‘Man, I feel like I’m in jail sometimes.’  But you go back, play basketball, have a good (practice), talk to your guys — and they’re like brothers to me — so it all helps and it all works out.”

Now that Murray spoke out, all four teams left in the NBA Playoffs have players who have spoken out about their mental health.

LA Lakers: LeBron James

Boston Celtics: Gordon Hayward & Jaylen Brown

Miami Heat: Meyers Leonard
